DESIGN CHALLENGE

Design 54 units of affordable housing on 6 acres in an established single family neighborhood.

DESIGN APPROACH

Seameadow Village was designed and built in the late 1980s and was the first newly constructed multifamily housing development designed by our firm. It was our first attempt at disguising multifamily housing in traditional New England and Cape Cod single family house forms – designing what appears to be a large single family house which in fact contained 4 – 6 units of housing. We paid particular attention to the end units to resolve the larger massing of the entire building, using the idea of the attached “shed” so typical of New England homes – again creating a residential scale and feeling We also located the housing around a common central area to create a sense of neighborhood with individual building entries as was done in New England villages. This approach proved so successful that it was the basis upon which our firm was selected for numerous other developments over the following decades.
